Why Reddit and forum threads keep beating your pages
Reddit threads and forum posts now outrank brand pages and get cited more often in AI Overviews. Here is why, and what a site owner can do about it.
Search for almost any product comparison, troubleshooting question, or "is it worth it" query and you will likely see a Reddit thread or forum post near the top, sometimes above pages built specifically to answer that question. AI Overviews do the same thing, pulling a quote from a five-year-old forum reply instead of a brand's own guide. This is not a glitch. It reflects a real shift in how Google and AI engines decide what to trust.
Why forum content ranks so well
Google has spent years pushing back against thin, template-driven content built to catch a keyword. Forum threads and Reddit posts have the opposite shape: a real person asking a specific question, other real people answering with a mix of opinions, corrections, and follow-up detail. That structure maps closely to what Google's helpful content system and quality raters look for: first-hand experience, disagreement instead of a single scripted answer, and language that sounds like a person rather than a brand.
- First-person experience ("I tried this and here's what happened") over generic advice
- Multiple viewpoints in one place instead of one company's take
- Frequent updates as new replies come in, which reads as freshness
- Specific, narrow questions that match how people actually search now
A 2024 licensing deal made Reddit's content directly available to Google for training and retrieval, which likely reinforced this pattern, though Google has not published exactly how much that deal affects ranking versus the content matching what its systems already reward on its own.
The 'Discussions and forums' feature is a separate thing
Beyond forum threads ranking normally, Google added a distinct "Discussions and forums" section to results, sometimes as its own filter tab, sometimes as a carousel mixed into the main results. This surfaces Reddit, Quora, and other community threads specifically because they are discussions, not because a single reply out-optimized a landing page. Treat it as a separate SERP feature with its own logic, not a bug in the normal algorithm.
Why AI Overviews lean on the same content
AI Overviews and chatbots retrieve and summarize passages rather than rank whole pages. A forum thread often reads like a pre-written answer: a question at the top, a direct reply, caveats and edge cases from other commenters right underneath. That shape is easy for a model to lift and quote. A marketing page written to sell rather than answer is harder to extract a clean, neutral-sounding answer from. This connection is well observed across many searches, but the exact retrieval mechanics are not public, so treat it as a strong pattern rather than a documented rule.
What a site owner can actually do
You will not out-rank Reddit by copying its format. Competing on the same terms usually reads as fake, and both Google and readers notice. Instead, treat forums as a channel to participate in honestly, and bring the qualities that make forum content win back onto your own site.
- Search your brand and product names on Reddit and relevant forums regularly, so you know what people actually say when no one is selling to them
- Answer questions on those threads as a person with real expertise, disclosing who you are, instead of posting unmarked promotional content
- Add genuine first-person material to your own site: real before-and-after results, specific numbers, edge cases that didn't work, not just polished claims
- Build a comments or review section you don't heavily curate, so your own pages start to carry some of the same multi-voice signal
- Don't fabricate forum posts or pay for fake threads. It is easy to spot, and a platform ban or a Google trust hit costs more than the traffic it might win
You can't out-Reddit Reddit. You can only stop writing like a brand and start answering like a person.
Forums and community threads are not going away from search results, and AI engines are only getting better at pulling from them. The realistic goal is not to erase them from the results above you. It's to show up in those same conversations honestly, and to make your own pages sound like they were written by someone who has actually done the thing, not just someone trying to rank for it.
