E-E-A-T for AI search: the trust signals that get you cited
Google has scored trust signals for years. Now AI engines use the same ones to decide what to cite. Here is what actually moves the needle and what doesn't.
Google's ranking guidelines have talked about E-E-A-T, experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust, for years. Now the same signals decide something new: whether an AI engine treats your page as a source worth citing at all. If ChatGPT or an AI Overview can't tell who wrote a page or why it should be trusted, it routes around that page and cites a competitor instead.
What E-E-A-T actually means
Experience means the author has actually done the thing they're writing about, not just read about it. Expertise means they understand the subject at a level beyond a summary. Authoritativeness means other credible sources point to them. Trust is the one that overrides the rest: even a genuine expert loses credit if the page hides who wrote it, buries contact information, or reads like it was generated to rank rather than to help.
Google folded these into its quality rater guidelines because raters, and eventually its ranking systems, needed a way to separate a firsthand account from a rewritten one. AI engines face the identical problem, just with higher stakes: cite the wrong source and the model repeats a mistake to the user directly, with no results page to hedge it.
Why AI engines care more than Google ever did
A search engine can show ten links and let the user judge which one to trust. An answer engine picks one version of the truth and states it as fact. That forces the model to lean harder on provenance: who said this, do they have a track record, does the rest of the site back up the claim. Pages with a named author, a real bio, and evidence of firsthand experience are easier for a model to treat as a safe citation. Anonymous or thin pages are easier to skip, even if the underlying information is correct.
The trust signals that actually help
- A named author with a real bio, linked from the article to a full bio page describing their actual background
- An about page and working contact details that match a real organization, not a placeholder
- Original evidence: your own test results, screenshots, numbers, or a firsthand account of doing the thing
- Outbound citations to primary sources (studies, documentation, official statements) instead of only other blogs
- A visible last-updated date, especially on anything time-sensitive
- Consistency: the same author's other articles support the same level of expertise, not a one-off
What doesn't move the needle
A few tactics look like trust signals but don't function as one. A generic "medically reviewed" or "expert reviewed" badge with no reviewer name attached tells a model nothing. The same short author bio copy-pasted across hundreds of articles on different topics reads as a template, not a credential. Claiming a credential that doesn't hold up under a quick search is worse than having none, since it is now a trust problem instead of a missing signal. And working the phrase "as an SEO expert" into a sentence does not substitute for showing expertise in the sentence itself.
A quick audit
- List your ten highest-traffic or highest-intent pages
- Check each one for a named author with a working link to a real bio
- Confirm the bio describes specific, checkable experience, not just a job title
- Add one piece of original evidence to each page: a real number, a screenshot, a firsthand result
- Make sure your about and contact pages are current and cross-linked from author bios
- Re-check after a quarter to see if AI engines or Google Search Console show any change in citations or impressions
Trust is the signal that overrides the rest. Real expertise, hidden behind an anonymous byline, still reads as unverifiable to a model deciding what to cite.
None of this is a guaranteed ranking lever. Nobody outside Google or the AI labs can say precisely how much weight a byline or an about page carries, and it would be dishonest to claim an exact number. What is fairly clear from how these systems behave is the direction: pages that make it easy to verify who wrote them and why they know the subject are in a better position to be trusted, by a human reader and by a model deciding what to repeat. Start with your highest-value pages, put a real name and real evidence behind them, and treat the rest of the site the same way over time.
